“Illustration” is art that accompanies the written word or an implied concept. It can be for any type of media, and can often cross the line into fine art or collectibles. I begin a project by hand, with research, pens and pencils, then I move into 3D, photography, collage, and back to inks and sometimes paints, with the final step being digital. I have had paid projects creating artwork for:

I am capable of illustration, layout & design for an entire book, cover to cover. I have been hired for writing and first-pass editing. I am also sometimes hired to deliver a book all the way to press, or get a book to “proof stage” in tangible form. I also know the ins and outs of Print-On-Demand (P.O.D.) and can deliver a softcover or hardback P.O.D. book that the independent author can maintain once released. 3-D Art & Animation:

I was provided with a base, rigged 3D concept, then created 20+ reposed illustrated renders for a recurring mascot, in a major publisher’s children’s text book. Layout & Design:

I am often hired for the layout of text, for the design of borders, title type for a cover and for fitting illustration to the page.
[Typical Pay Rate: Illustration vs. Design: Illustration is art from nothing–drawn and constructed from scratch to accompany the written word. It takes research, creativity and loads of time, to do it right. Design is typically the style and assemblage of parts to make a cohesive whole. It involves a different way of thinking, but when a client hires me to both illustrate and design, the freedom that affords me can lead to very distinct and artful, books and media. I can be hired to add decorative borders or extend artwork to better fit the page spread. The layout of type around the art is also part of designing a book. I typically handle design and layout under an hourly rate, as opposed to a flat fee. Clients often “cap” maximum hours so we can stop and check how things are progressing.
